The Millennium Challenge Account Nepal (MCA-Nepal) has completed construction of an 18-kilometre section of the cross-border transmission line connecting the 400 kV New Butwal Substation to the Nepal-India border.

The section, constructed under the MCC Nepal Compact, is expected to support Nepal’s efforts to strengthen its transmission network and expand cross-border electricity trade.

MCA-Nepal accelerated the construction of the 18-kilometre section in response to a request from the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and completed the work within the agreed timeframe, according to a statement issued by MCA-Nepal.

The construction work was completed within nine months of laying of the foundation stone. The foundation stone for the transmission line was laid on November 26, 2025, by then Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal and then US Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson.

MCA-Nepal Executive Director Khadga Bahadur Bisht said the achievement reflects MCA-Nepal’s commitment to delivering on the priorities of the Government of Nepal.

“We are proud to have completed construction of this important 18km section of the cross-border transmission line. The government of Nepal asked us to accelerate the work, and MCA-Nepal responded by bringing together the resources, contractors, and partners needed to complete the construction within an expedited timeframe," he said. 

"We now look forward to the remaining steps toward energizing the line and, ultimately, strengthening electricity connectivity and energy cooperation between Nepal and India and the broader region," he said.
