Electricite Du Cambodge and Electricite Du Laos agreed to jointly conduct a feasibility study on a cross-border interconnection power grid, a move that will help promote cooperation with regional power connections.

The two sides signed the “Joint Study Framework on Development of the ASEAN Power Grid Feasibility Study for Cross-Border Interconnection between Cambodia and Lao PRD” agreement in Phnom Penh on Monday.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Victor Jona, Senior Official on ASEAN Energy and Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, senior officials of the Electricity Authority of Cambodia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Laos, and the World Bank.

Laos, frequently referred to as the “Battery of Southeast Asia” due to its massive hydropower generation capacity, views the grid integration as a strategic path to secure long-term, clean energy export revenues.

The agreement marks a crucial milestone in strengthening the high-voltage infrastructure that links the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

Regarding the regional power interconnection in ASEAN, Energy Minister Keo Rottanak has emphasised that the realisation of the long-awaited ASEAN Power Grid is no longer a question of technical capability or lack of capital, but of political execution.
