Celtic Interconnector cable: Ireland's €1.6 billion subsea power link to France and Europe begins

A €1.6 billion ($1.88 billion) subsea cable is being deployed across the Atlantic and Irish Seas, establishing Ireland's first direct energy connection to continental Europe. The Celtic Interconnector will link Ireland's energy grid to France's power system.

The Celtic Interconnector will stretch 700 kilometers from Ireland's south coast to northwest France. The cable will transmit 700 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The cable will be positioned under the seabed to protect it from storms and maritime vessels.

The Celtic Interconnector is part of European efforts to link national power grids, facilitating electricity trading and strengthening power systems. As renewable energy sources increase their share of supply, cross-border power sharing becomes essential. When wind generation is low in Ireland, solar generation in Spain or nuclear generation in France can provide backup through interconnected transmission grids.
