Ethiopia has presented an ambitious national roadmap aimed at expanding electricity access and strengthening its renewable energy sector during the Mission 300 conference in Cape Town, South Africa, positioning the country as a key player in Africa’s drive toward universal electrification.
Speaking at the high-level forum, Ethiopia’s Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa outlined the country’s National Energy Compact, a strategic framework designed to accelerate electrification, attract private investment, and deepen regional power integration.
The summit forms part of Mission 300, a continent-wide effort led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank to connect 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa to electricity by 2030. The initiative targets a major energy deficit on the continent, where nearly 600 million people currently lack access to power.
Presenting the compact, Itefa said Ethiopia’s strategy rests on five pillars: expanding electricity access, promoting clean cooking solutions, strengthening power infrastructure, increasing regional electricity trade, and improving the institutional capacity of the energy sector.
