China has become a catalyst for the world’s energy transition by building cheaper clean technologies and enabling emerging and developed countries to accelerate their shift away from fossil fuels, says energy think-tank Ember.

Chinese companies manufacture 80 per cent of the world’s solar panels and 60 per cent of wind turbines, finds Ember’s China Energy Transition Review 2025, published on September 9. The country also leads the global production of batteries, electric vehicles and heat pumps, underscoring its central role in clean energy supply chains.

China has also grown into the world’s leading innovation hub for clean technologies, driving advances that are cutting-edge and that help make renewables more affordable

Its share of global patent applications in clean energy rose to around 75 per cent in 2022 from about 5 per cent in 2000, shows data from the International Renewable Energy Agency from February. This includes 90 per cent of patents in solar and wind, 85 per cent in energy storage, and more than 70 per cent in batteries and electric mobility.
