Mozambique-Malawi power line nears commercial operation

Malawi is a step closer to joining the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), with the new transmission line linking Mozambique and Malawi expected to enter commercial operation later this month following the completion of final tests. 

Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) Joaquim Henriques Ou-Chim said the 218-kilometre transmission line has already been energised and is currently undergoing testing. “The line has already been energised; it is now in the testing period and we count on the fact that this month it may start commercial operation. But technically it is in a testing period to check its operation,” Ou-Chim said.

Ou-Chim said testing started two weeks ago and is expected to continue for at least another week, although the process could be extended if any technical anomalies are identified.

The commercial operations phase marks the final stage of the project, allowing electricity to be transmitted regularly to consumers following the successful completion of testing, commissioning and technical validation.
