Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in its push toward regional electricity market integration with the successful synchronisation of its national grid to the West African Power Pool, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, Adelabu described the development as a transformative step for Nigeria’s power sector and the wider West African market.

He said the synchronisation creates fresh opportunities for competitive energy trading, improved foreign exchange earnings, and greater private-sector participation in electricity generation.

The minister explained that the synchronisation test, conducted on November 8, 2025, between 5:04 a.m. and 9:04 a.m.—marked the first time Nigeria’s grid operated in a unified configuration with networks across the sub-region.

For four uninterrupted hours, electricity flowed across borders at a common frequency, linking Nigeria with Niger Republic, parts of Benin and Togo, as well as the broader WAPP system covering Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, and Mali.
