An east-west corridor would allow regions with low-cost power to supply markets across Canada, thus making more efficient use of the country’s resources.While north-south connections are more profitable for now, expanding power producers’ access to Canadian markets would both protect their investments against disruptions in international trade and support Canada’s future electricity demand, which is expected to triple by 2050.

Like the British grid, a Canadian national grid could be a vital asset in times of crisis. Connected grids can more easily handle extreme weather and unexpected outages. If widespread predictions that such events will become more frequent and intense are correct, we should get building now.
