National Grid and TenneT Germany have announced the joint development of a proposed “multi‑purpose” electricity link between the UK and Germany.
The project is designed to carry offshore wind power across the North Sea and support cross‑border energy trading.
Named GriffinLink, the proposed interconnector would be capable of simultaneously connecting up to 2GW of offshore wind generation between the two systems. If it proceeds, the operators expect it to be operational in the late 2030s. In the next few years, on and offshore studies will commence, including further analysis of existing developments and proposals, as part of an integrated European grid, both parties announced.
The news of this partnership follows yesterday’s announcement, energy ministers from the UK and nine other European countries had signed a joint declaration in Hamburg committing to large-scale co-operation on offshore wind and cross‑border electricity links in the North Sea.
