Nearly 20 years in the making, the Asean Power Grid (APG) is seeing renewed momentum as regional discussions intensify and international partners rally behind the initiative.

The ambition of linking the power systems of all ten Asean nations is no longer distant.

It was first introduced in 1997 as a flagship initiative by the Heads of Asean Power Utilities and Authorities (HAPUA), designed to promote regional energy sharing, efficiency and sustainability.

Over the years, it has evolved into the main platform for renewable energy transmission in Southeast Asia and forming the backbone of Asean’s decarbonization agenda.

However, its progress has been slow. This is because no single Asean body has the authority to coordinate APG planning, so decisions must rely on consensus
