The Mediterranean Sea holds some of Europe’s least-tapped offshore wind resources, yet its surrounding energy grids face mounting congestion.
As power curtailment grows and new transmission capacity lags behind clean energy goals, researchers are evaluating a critical trade-off. They are testing whether electricity generated by these turbines might sometimes be worth more as clean hydrogen gas than as direct megawatt-hours.
A study published in Frontiers in Energy Research offers a detailed spatial assessment, mapping 378 offshore wind configurations to determine where hybrid wind-to-hydrogen systems become economically competitive.
The Mediterranean’s offshore wind potential is immense, but accessing it grows increasingly complex.
Coastal grids across several nations are heavily strained, making curtailment—wasting generated electricity because the network cannot absorb it—a major barrier to new investment. Building new transmission lines takes capital and time that outpaces project timelines.
Geography adds another hurdle. The Mediterranean seafloor drops steeply beyond narrow coastal shelves, ruling out fixed-bottom foundations used in shallow waters like the North Sea.
