India is set to take a revolutionary step in the energy sector by collaborating with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on a unique energy exchange project. The initiative involves laying undersea power cables, enabling seamless electricity trade between the countries. According to a senior official from the Ministry of Power, India will soon issue tenders for the project, which could also allow India to supply electricity to these Gulf nations when required.

The project comes at a time when Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both rich in oil resources, are aggressively moving toward reducing fossil fuel consumption in the future.

The official explained that the tender process for laying undersea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables has recently been initiated. Once completed, this could become an important model of cross-border energy exchange. The project is not only a symbol of energy innovation but also a demonstration of international cooperation.

The energy exchange will offer economic, environmental and strategic benefits for all three countries. As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, India’s energy demand is increasing rapidly and this project will provide access to affordable, clean energy from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, especially during times of domestic shortfalls. Additionally, the time zone difference with Saudi Arabia allows India to import solar energy in real time during their late evening, while India can export solar power to Saudi Arabia and the UAE during its daytime. India will also provide technology and manpower support for renewable energy projects in these countries.
