Over 1,000GW of renewable capacity is awaiting grid connection across Europe due to stretching permitting timelines, according to a report from power market analytics firm Aurora Energy Research.

According to Aurora’s 2026 European Renewables Market Overview Report (RESMOR), Europe will need about €1.5 trillion in cumulative investment by 2050 to support the expansion of renewable energy, as capacity is expected to more than triple from 2026 to 2050.

The report notes as solar, onshore and offshore wind capacity have grown by over 150% in the past decade, so too have delays in permitting, in some markets stretching up to a decade despite EU rules requiring decisions within two years.

More than 1TW of renewable capacity is now awaiting grid connections across Europe, with Italy accounting for roughly 370GW of the pipeline, says the research.

Sameer Hussain, Research Senior Analyst at Aurora Energy Research, said: “Record levels of negative pricing and increasing curtailment are putting significant pressure on the profitability of renewable projects across Europe.
