PETRA monitors new interconnection projects, including Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is monitoring the implementation of several new interconnection projects, including the Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia interconnection project with a capacity of up to 1,000MW.

In addition, the ministry is overseeing the second Malaysia-Singapore interconnection project, which is targeted to commence operations by 2029 with a minimum capacity of 1,000MW, as well as the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore (VMS) interconnection project with a capacity of up to 2,000MW.

“The successful implementation of Phase 2 of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) (100MW) has demonstrated that regional grid integration is highly viable from both commercial and technical perspectives,” the ministry said in a written reply to the Dewan Negara, published on the Parliament website.

The ministry was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Ng Keng Heng on the latest assessment of the Asean Power Grid (APG) energy integration programme and Malaysia’s infrastructure readiness.

PETRA said the APG energy integration programme is now considered to be at a highly progressive stage, having moved into the operational phase for implementing multilateral cross-border electricity trading.
