A COMMON platform for the accelerated realisation of the Asean Power Grid (APG) has been sought for by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, which presents a bold strategy for moving beyond the scattered nature of the energy sector in Southeast Asia into more coherent geopolitics.

This common framework that promotes an effective network of cross-border energy infrastructure in the region is key in enabling Sarawak to position itself as a dominant player in green energy through its vast hydropower potential, as the state will essentially act as the ‘battery’ of the whole of Southeast Asia.

The integration of this framework will play a critical role in overcoming challenges associated with the development of the APG into a common project instead of being confined to bilateral efforts.

By establishing such a network of energy infrastructure, the Asean bloc will be able to achieve greater energy security while minimising volatility and ensuring that countries within the bloc are able to transition towards sustainable energy.

During the recently concluded Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (APGH) 2026 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, Sarawak highlighted the immediate need for the APG.
