SINGAPORE – Renaming the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) to the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (METI) is a signal of the growing importance of energy, amid rising geopolitical uncertainty and the need to safeguard energy security, say experts.

The name change, which takes effect from Oct 1 – also reflects energy’s role as a key economic pillar as the nation continues its pursuit of clean energy.

Announcing the change on July 22, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said energy is becoming increasingly central to Singapore’s economic competitiveness, industrial transformation and long-term resilience.

Tan-Soo Jie Sheng, director of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, said the change formally elevates energy from one of the many issues handled by MTI to a central pillar of Singapore’s economic strategy.

“As the global energy landscape becomes more uncertain, integrating energy more explicitly into the ministry’s mandate strengthens Singapore’s ability to pursue decarbonisation while safeguarding energy security,” he said, adding that energy security has become a key priority alongside trade and economic competitiveness.
