Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (Admie) and Great Sea Interconnector SA announced on Friday that Greek and Cypriot authorities have issued the Navtex maritime notices needed for seabed surveys along the planned route of the Crete-Cyprus electricity link. Turkey responded with a counter-Navtex challenging the planned research in the eastern Mediterranean.

The research vessel Abeille Marengo is to conduct the surveys in maritime areas along the proposed route. According to the announcement, the work is part of ongoing technical activity on the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) and will supply further data needed for the detailed technical design of the project.

Ankara issued a counter-Navtex, numbered 1105/26, in reply to the Greek maritime notice HA15-1411/26. Turkey asserts that part of the sea area covered by the Greek notice lies within its continental shelf, whose limits it says were communicated to the United Nations on March 18, 2020.

Turkish authorities also state that they have not consented to the research described in the Greek notice, which they call “unauthorised”. The Turkish Navtex adds that any research in areas Ankara regards as under its maritime jurisdiction must be coordinated with the relevant Turkish authorities.

The development comes while the future of the GSI remains uncertain, as the project has suffered delays tied to maritime disputes in the eastern Mediterranean.
